Newcastle Council staff recommended approving a $ 3 million refurbishment of the beach hotel, despite opposition from hundreds of Merewether residents. Famous Sydney hotel owner Andrew Lazaro, who owns the Shoal Bay Country Club and Hamilton Exchange, purchased the landmark Frederick Street Pub in 2019 and has a new upstairs terrace overlooking the beach and live music venue upstairs.
